Our MasPower 8 kw generator has been leaking raw water from the pump shaft for some time. The water was confined to a small area between stringers and never amounted to more than a gallon after running all night. Since we are in one spot for a month I decided to buy the rebuild kit and fix the leak. Jabsco makes the pumps for many of the small, marinized diesel engines. The repair kit was $115 and included seals, sling o-ring, face plate with new screws, pre pressed bearing on the new shaft and a new impeller.
The pump side of the generator is mounted very closed to the outside wall of the boat with the sound shield frame making it hard to reach down low. Sockets and gear wrenches are too thick to use on the mounting bolts so blindly turning an open end wrench 5 to 8 degrees was the only alternative. Note to self: Get a set of crow feet wrenches and a stubby rachet drive!
Once I got the pump of the block the repair was not to bad. I used sockets to press the seals out and the vice to push the shaft and bearings out of the pump's housing. The culprit appears to be corrosion on the shaft under both seals. cleaned the brass housing, reversed the process then used silicone on the seals and grease on the new bearings. Bolting the pump back on the block was the same PITA.
